Cost: $330 per sailor for 8 weeks age 8 – 18yrs
Powerboat Safe Boaters Certificate classes
LEYSF is pleased to offer a NASBLA-approved Safe Boater education program that complies with the law (“In order to operate a motorboat of 10hp or greater, FL law requires anyone born on or after Jan 1, 1988, to successfully complete an approved boating safety course and obtain a Boating Safety Education ID Card.”). At the end of the class, you will be ready to take the test in your own time.
Our youth boater education follows Florida’s FWC How to Boat Smart boater education course (aka “The Bobber Course”) in addition to hand’s on power boating practice. The “Bobber Card” course teaches the content knowledge, it does not provide for any on-the-water skills development. The US Coast Guard and NASBLA have identified 30+ specific boat handling skills that all beginning boat operators should be able to demonstrate. LEYSF teaches these on-the-water skills as part of its safe boater education training. This is for ages 12 – 18 years.
Classes are from 12:30 – 3pm on Thur 10/1, 10/8, 10/15 and 10/22 or starting 10/29, 11/5, 11/12 and 11/19
Cost is $375 for 4 weeks ages 12 – 18yrs

What will we be learning in the Sailing Class?
We will be learning how sailboats work, about the wind, rigging and terminology. We will start by learning to steer near shore and practice the movements for tacking. In each class we’ll review what we learned before and practice. During the sessions we’ll learn to sail on a “reach” and to “tack” (turn) and progress to sailing “upwind” and “downwind” and “gybing”. We will also learn to right the boat after a capsize, lots of sailing terminology, and how to tie knots.

Students learn in a class environment and then put their skills into practice on the water. LEYSF provides boats and great instructors, you just need to:
- be aged 8yrs to 7th grade (older kids here), and able to swim,
- bring a life jacket,
- water shoes that keep your toes covered (no flip-flops),
- water bottle,
- sunblock,
- quick-dry shorts and shirt,
- towel
- Helmets are suggested for beginner class. Skateboard helmets are great. Bicycle helmets are okay if they aren’t too tall. There are sailing helmets available too.
