Sailing Club @ UCF

Welcome to the Sailing Club @UCF webpage! LEYSF is proud to host the Sailing Club @ UCF, a UCF Registered Student Organization and a member of the UCF Sport Club Council since 2019. The student-led club’s mission is “to provide UCF students an opportunity to learn and compete in the sport of sailing while fostering a lifelong love of the sport”. To achieve this LEYSF allows us use of their fleet and provides coaching and advising to our student leadership.

The Facility

Lake Eustis Youth Sailing Foundation is hosted by the Lake Eustis Sailing Club. About an hour off campus, we regularly carpool from campus on weekends to make it easy for everyone to go. The club is located on the north east shore of Lake Eustis, at 1310 County Rd 452, Eustis, FL 32726. Please park to the right of the clubhouse.

LEYSF has a variety of boats. We primarily use the Club 420s, 14 foot doublehanded racing dinghies that, along with the Club FJ, form the backbone of high school and college sailing. The foundation also owns Lasers, singlehanded racing dinghies with three different size sails making it suitable for everyone from youth to Olympians. Other boats include an MC Scow, a Hobie 16 catamaran, and a Harpoon 5.2.

SC@UCF team gear can be purchased from LEYSF. We have shirts, hats, burgees, and are working on jackets. Proceeds go directly to supporting the SC@UCF.

Our Events

We have our official practices on Sundays from 12-4 at LEYSF. All level two members can come out and sail. During practices you can prepare for the next regatta or just go for a nice sail around on the lake. You get to choose how you sail! Everyone gets to just go out and sail around with fellow students! These practice run from September through November in the Fall, and Mid-January through Mid-April in the Spring.

Our racing team competes in the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association, a conference of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association covering Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, and the Carolinas. This semester’s regattas are:

  • SAISA South Points 4 @ Eckerd – 9/28
  • Lake Virginia Invitational @ Rollins – 10/5

Sailing Club @ UCF members are much sought after as crew in various events throughout Central Florida, ranging from small club events and casual races to national-level championship events. Our members often crew in events hosted by LESC, the Lake Monroe Sailing Association in Sanford, and other sailing clubs in the Central Florida Area. Sailors from our club have also sailed in the Lightning Winter Series, the San Juan 21 Florida District Series, the St. Pete NOOD regatta, and other high-level events. Sailing is a lifelong sport, and all members – not just the race team – are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.

We also has socials on campus at UCF at least once every month during the semester. Come out and see what we’re about!

Membership & Dues

Our members receive financial assistance from the Sport Club Council and donations to make sailing accessible to everyone. We also have three levels of membership so everyone can pick their level of involvement. Dues can be paid by cash or check to the president or treasurer at any club event.

Initial membership dues are $50 for the year or $30 per semester, which covers our monthly club socials on and around campus, discounts on team gear, and access to special events.

“Level two” membership dues, which covers the use of club equipment at practices, are an additional $250 for the year or $150 for the semester. This is due within two weeks of starting practice. You can join as level one or two at any point in the semester.

Lastly, “level three” membership dues, to join the race team, are an additional $50 for the year or $40 per semester over level two. Race team registration happens early each semester, before the first regatta.

Altogether, for just $350 you have access to one of the largest and most active networks of sailors in the country. We have over 30 official sailing events – not to mention dozens of unofficial events – throughout the year that you can participate in. This is the greatest opportunity to learn to sail and, if you desire, to compete with your peers. Don’t miss it!

All members are required to participate in at least one community service event per year. Our biggest events are to help the LESC host the Inland Lakes Championship in October and the George Washington’s Birthday Regatta in February. These are two of the biggest youth regattas in the region and take a lot of manpower to be successful. These events are extremely rewarding to volunteer for and it can be as much fun (and much less stressful) to volunteer as it is to compete.

To become a member just come to one of our on-campus events or email us! All levels of the club are open to any UCF Student enrolled in at least 6 credit hours, but only full-time (12+ credits) undergraduates can compete in intercollegiate regattas as per ICSA regulations.
